The Blake Roberts Band - 21 Restless Grams
What makes the Blake Roberts band unique is the is the fact that they swing both sides of the pop rock scale encompassing melodic rock as well as jazz in their music, offering a rich and diverse tapestry of sounds.
Backed up by strong dynamic vocals, the band offers a solid, well-crafted mix of sincere delicacy and strong passion. The lead singer Blake Roberts himself displays a sensual yet riveting voice on vocals while simultaneously on his acoustic Guitar. The other members of the band are Gerard DeBruyn on Bass, Greg Bedford and Dinay Naidu the session guitarists and Matt Bedford on the session Drums.
Blake Roberts himself said about the album: "The title 21 restless grams I got from a movie I watched one night - 21 Grams. It was quite an intense movie where a lady's husband dies and another man gets his heart, and ends up with her. I was intrigued by the title and researched it on the net.
"I found out it was a reference to the weight of the soul and not the heart as I had innitially guessed. The story goes that there was once a physician who was adamant that the soul was real and he set about trying to prove it by weighing a number of people on their death beds. He weighed them just before and after they had passed away and concluded that they each lost approximately 21grams - which he then suggested was the weight of the soul.
"I was really intrigued by this idea and added the word Restless into the mix to describe a restless soul. Majority of the songs focus on the idea of flesh versus the soul - is there a soul or is it just our flesh that we are edifying while we're here on earth. I hope to challenge people(myself included) to ponder this and as a result determine what is really important in life."
"In terms of a sound, I think a lot of the originality comes from the mix of influences within the band. I guess this is the case with a lot of bands today, but being a solo artist that plays with a session band - there really is quite an unusual sound that hovers somewhere between acoustic rock and jazz. Depending on whose playing on the day the sound may even vary slightly according to the influences of the musicians involved, so i find each show unique to some degree."
