Katie Melua - Piece By Piece

Adult Contemporary, Jazz
Piece By Piece

Katie Melua's long awaited second album Piece By Piece comes nearly two years after the release of her multi-platinum selling debut album Call Off The Search and contains a larger percentage of self-penned songs than the previous album demonstraing significant developments of Katie as a singer and writer.

"Although people talk about the 'difficult second album', we have enjoyed the pressure and the pleasure of trying to get this album right for ourselves initially, rather than specifically worrying about what the audience will think said Katie.

Katie's producer and Dramatico label head Mike Batt said: "It is clear that Katie has come a long way in the two years since her first album was released. Back then, she was a student taking her very first steps. On the second album, it is evident that she has travelled and grown."

He continues, "She has always been a self-assured singer and performer, but the wealth of live touring that she has done both in small clubs and headlining to up to 10,000 people has given her a maturity which I can only see continuing. It is a pure accident of symmetry that she has written four and a half of the tracks and I have written four and a half of the tracks (one being a co-write between us), and the other quarter of the album is made up of three versions of great songs that we just wanted to do".

Katie chose to continue recording with the line up of veteran musicians who played on her first album, namely Henry Spinetti (drums), Chris Spedding and Jim Cregan (guitars), Tim Harries (bass) and Mike Batt (piano). The album was recorded in a series of two or three day sessions interspersed between the last six months of her touring schedule.
