Alain (Gerard Depardieu) and Gis (Fanny Ardant) are a married Jewish couple who enjoy all of the trappings of a comfortable middle-class life until the day that their only son announces his plans to marry a Catholic girl. Facing an empty nest and midlife crisis, they decide on a whim to leave their upscale home in Paris and travel to Israel in search of their neglected Jewish roots.
While the couple are excited at first about their new life, fate puts a damper on their enthusiasm; the flat they rented is not at all what they expected, their baggage gets lost en route, and they find that most of the locals don't take their mid-life embrace of Judaism very seriously.
Alain is especially upset when a job at a hospital he'd been counting on falls though, and to add insult to injury he finds that Gisele soon strikes up an uncomfortably close friendship with a handsome young rabbi.
As the pair struggle to come to terms with their new life in this new land they begin to wonder if such a radical change at their stage of life was such a wise move after all, and whether their love will be strong enough after all these years to prevail.
